After weeks of pre-release cryptic tidbits surrounding the forthcoming and much-anticipated new album "Reflektor" from Montreal-based indie rockers Arcade Fire, the bandâs titular first single appears to have leaked online.
Scheduled to be released on Monday, Sept. 9 at 9 p.m. as part of the bandâs â9/9/9â marketing campaign, the James Murphy-produced dance number has been delighting fans of the band this weekend, after Pitchfork posted a , according to Stereogum. The file has since been made invalid.
The song, which features a distinct retro disco sound with electronic flourishes, is filled out by a melancholic voice that sounds a lot like David Bowie. The British artist has been rumoured to make a guest appearance on the bandâs fourth album.
According to the British newspaper The Sun, the pop icon recently joined the band for a recording session at New Yorkâs Electric Lady Studios, where they recorded a track for the album.
For weeks, Montrealâs most-famous music export has been slowly releasing morsels of information related to its new album, set for release on Oct. 29. But fans have been anticipating another date: Sept 9. That date is a part of the bandâs clever â9/9/9â underground marketing campaign.
Along with a secret , a , a , and street art that popped up around the globe, the campaign has been holding fansâ attention.
The veil of secrecy surrounding the campaign, however, was lifted last week when filmmaker Anton Corbijn told the Daily Beast about his latest project.
"Iâm working on a really great song at the moment: Arade Fireâs new single," Corbijn, the man behind Nirvanaâs "Heart-Shaped Box," said in the interview.
"The song is called Reflektor, and youâll be able to see it Monday âŠ. I canât say much more than that, because itâs all a surprise. Youâll have to watch the TV Monday evening."
Arcade Fireâs previous studio album, 2010âs The Suburbs, topped charts in Canada and around the world, and won them numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
