WASHINGTON - The Dole Fresh Fruit company has joined firms recalling Honduran cantaloupes after they were linked to a salmonella outbreak in the U.S. and Canada.

The recalled cantaloupes were distributed throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada in cardboard cartons with the brand "Dole" and "Product of Honduras" printed on each of the side panels.

The cantaloupes were grown, packed and shipped by an independent third-party grower, Agropecuaria Montelibano.

Two other companies, Chiquita Brands International Inc. and Simply Fresh Fruit Inc., issued recalls of their own Thursday.

Fifty people in 16 states and nine in Canada have fallen sick after eating tainted cantaloupes, however no deaths have been reported.

Symptoms of food-borne salmonella include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
