TORONTO - A committee set up by Ontario's chief coroner has determined that 10 deaths at a hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., last year were caused by C. difficile bacteria.
The committee had investigated 26 deaths that occurred at Sault Area Hospital between April and November 2006 in which C. difficile was thought to be a factor.
The committee found C. difficile was a contributing factor in another eight of the 26 deaths, but not a factor in the remaining eight.
Dr. Bonita Porter, who served as committee chairwoman, says the hospital and families of the deceased have been informed of the findings.
