KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Coalition forces say they've destroyed a weapons cache that included anti-aircraft machine-gun rounds and IED-making materials during an operation in the Panjwaii district of Kandahar.

Ten Taliban insurgents were killed in the battle with a security force Tuesday near the village of Zangabad, in Panjwaii, where Canadians are focusing their efforts in the final year of Canada's combat mission.

Canadian Forces declined comment on whether the battle involved Canadians.

Coalition officials did not say which units were involved in the battle. They say insurgents fled the compound as a security force approached and air assaults were called in.

A separate firefight between coalition and Taliban forces killed an Afghan civilian out irrigating crops in the Arghandab district, on the outskirts of Kandahar city, where U.S. and Afghan forces have been fighting with insurgents throughout the summer. An investigation into the killing is underway.

There has been a massive increase in the number of U.S. troops on the ground in Afghanistan, and in Kandahar in particular, and there is pressure in the U.S. to show progress in the central Asian country where NATO forces have been at war for almost nine years.
