MANAMA, Bahrain - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is calling on Iran to show the world that it can be trusted to pursue the peaceful use of nuclear energy without diverting that technology to develop weapons.

Clinton made the plea Friday at an international security conference in the Persian Gulf nation of Bahrain, with an Iranian government delegation in attendance.

She expressed hope that Iran would come to a meeting scheduled for Monday in Geneva prepared to talk seriously about ways to demonstrate its peaceful intentions and to address the concerns of many nations that Iran has nuclear arms ambitions.

At the same time, she said the Obama administration's long-standing offer of a direct dialogue on nuclear issues still stands.
