LONDON - The Queen's eldest grandson, Peter Phillips, will keep his slim chance of becoming king intact because his Canadian bride-to-be has joined the Church of England.

Buckingham Palace on Thursday has confirmed a report in the Daily Telegraph that Autumn Kelly, a Roman Catholic, joined the church.

Kelly grew up in the Montreal suburb of Pointe-Claire, and graduated from McGill University in 2002.

She is engaged to marry Phillips, the son of Princess Anne, on May 17.

The Act of Settlement of 1701 requires the monarch to be a member of the Church of England and may not be married to a Roman Catholic.

The 30-year-old Phillips is 11th in line to the throne.
