A soldier stationed at CFB Shilo in Manitoba has been charged with attempted murder and other offences in connection with an altercation on the base over the weekend.

A Canadian Forces member suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot during the altercation, which the Defence Department said occurred early Sunday morning.

A soldier was quickly arrested and investigators recovered a gun. However, Capt. Yves Desbiens, a public affairs officer with the Canadian Forces Provost Marshal, said it has yet to be confirmed whether it was the gun used during the incident.

What investigators have confirmed is that the gun they seized was not a military-issued weapon, and was purchased legally.

Desbiens said in a telephone interview that he did not have information about the nature of the altercation, including what started the fight and how many people were involved.

He also could not confirm the gender or rank of the victim, and said his or her identity will likely not be revealed.

Master Cpl. Clarence Stillman, who is posted to CFB Shilo, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, four counts of careless use of a firearm, four counts of pointing a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The charges were laid on Monday by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS), which is investigating the incident. The CFNIS is an independent Military Police unit that investigates serious and sensitive matters relating to Department of National Defence property, employees or Canadian Forces personnel.
