Two months after walking down the aisle in a bridal gown, slain armoured car guard Michelle Shegelski has been laid to rest in the same white dress.
Dozens of family and friends who attended the 26-year-old’s funeral in Edmonton on Tuesday also received programs with Shegelski’s wedding portrait on the cover.
In his eulogy, her husband Victor recalled how the newlyweds had dreamt of a future together.
“What else could one possibly desire?†he said. “We had it all covered. Our future was planned full of adventure, glory and pirate treasure.â€
“I can say without a doubt that our wedding was the best day of our lives.â€
Shegelski’s life was cut short in mid-June when she and three co-workers were shot to death during a botched heist on the University of Alberta campus.
Her mother Cheryl Ernst described her as a passionate go-getter.
“Her approach to life was to run at it full speed and jump in. She lived life at a million miles an hour, but she always made time for family,†she told funeral attendees.
Shegelski’s service marks the third funeral in four days for employees of G4S Security.
Memorials have also been held for 39-year-old Eddie Rejano and 35-year-old Brian Ilesic. Matthew Schuman, another guard who sustained head injuries during the heist, remains in critical condition in hospital.
Suspect Travis Baumgartner, 21, will face charges of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder in court next month.
Regardless of what transpires in court, the outcome remains the same for Shegelski’s husband.
Victor concluded his eulogy by sharing one of his wife’s private aspirations.
“I found a quote in one of her notebooks: ‘When I grow up, I want to be capable. I want someone to say that’s a woman.’â€
“Ladies and gentleman, that’s a woman.â€
