The RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service provided an update Friday morning on their investigation into missing and murdered women in the province.

Police have been criticized for failing to provide news on how the investigation is tracking.

Winnipeg Police Chief Keith McCaskill said members of Project Devote will be given whatever they need to get to solve the investigation into missing and murdered women in the province.

"It's a very important project. It’s a task force of officers doing as much as they possibly can to determine what happened to victims to some very serious offences, people lost lives. People are missing, and we've got to come to the bottom of this.

He said the project members have been given "total rein to do whatever they need to do get this done. If they need additional resources we will give it to them."

Project Devote - a joint RCMP and Winnipeg Police initiative - was launched last year to investigate and hopefully prosecute cases earmarked by an older missing women task force.

Dozens of people participated in a march in Winnipeg this week to raise awareness for missing and murdered women.

Shawn Cameron Lamb, 52, has been arrested and charged in the deaths of three aboriginal women in Winnipeg.
