Hot and humid weather has followed Torontonians into the long weekend, prompting the city’s Medical Officer of Health to extend a heat alert for the third straight day.

When a heat alert is declared, citizens are advised to keep cool by staying in air-conditioned spaces, drinking plenty of water and wearing loose, breathable clothing.

Residents are also asked to regularly check on individuals who are more vulnerable to the heat including the elderly, young children and those with chronic illnesses.

The warning came Saturday morning as Toronto headed into a Canada Day long weekend packed with several outdoor events including the annual Pride Parade.

Environment Canada predicts temperatures within the city will hit a high of 32 C. The UV index is eight, or very high, meaning unprotected skin may burn more quickly.

When the UV is “very high,†the agency also advises members of the public to seek shade and avoid the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

But staying indoors altogether may be a hard sell.

Other scheduled outdoor events this weekend include Toronto Ribfest at Centennial Park and the Scotiabank Chin Picnic at Exhibition Place.

Earlier on Saturday, the mercury soared as runners gave their all in the 5K Pride and Remembrance Run -- which also hosts a 3K walk.

A slight reprieve is expected on Sunday, when forecasters say the high will be 28 C.
