FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. -- Organizers of a healing walk that passes by oilsands sites in northern Alberta say their event has attracted participants from beyond the province this year.

Eriel Deranger with the group Keepers of the Athabasca says over 200 people are walking the 13-kilometre route, and that some are from as far away as Kentucky and California.

The group says the walk on Saturday is meant to bring attention to how oilsands projects and pipelines affect surrounding communities and the environment.

This is the third year the walk has been held and Deranger says there are about twice as many people this year compared to last year.

She says her group decided to invite people from groups in other locations that have been working on oilsands issues, but who hadn't had a chance to view the projects first-hand.

RCMP have been escorting the group along roadways, and Deranger says there have been no confrontations.
