Several fire crews in the Halifax area were called to put out a fire at one of their own stations Thursday morning.

A blaze broke out just before 10 a.m. at a firehouse in Harrietsfield, N.S. about 10 kilometres south of Halifax.

Twelve trucks from other fire stations were called to the scene. Crews had the fire under control at around 11 a.m.

“Fire trucks just started coming, and they kept coming and coming. Who would have thought that it was the firehouse of all things to go up,†said Maxwell McLeod, a bystander who witnessed the blaze.

No one was in the building when the fire broke, but officials say the rear of the building suffered the most extensive damage.

“The rear of the station houses what we would call the living area, which is office space, training room, furnace room, kitchen, that kind of area,†said Brian Gray of the Halifax fire department.

“All the fire trucks that are housed at this station are safe,†he said.

Officials say an investigation has been launched into the cause of the incident.

This is not the first case of firehouses catching fire in Atlantic Canada. In July, two firehouses in New Brunswick were destroyed by flames.
