Airbnb says it has banned a guest from its lodging rentals service, and will reimburse the homeowners after a Calgary house was trashed.
Police estimate that between $50,000 and $70,000 worth of damage was done to a home that was rented out using the over the weekend
鈥淲e have zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour and our team is working quickly to make this right,鈥� Airbnb spokesperson Jakob Kerr said in a statement to 麻豆传媒 on Thursday.
Kerr said the guest who rented the two-storey home has been banned from using Airbnb in the future.
He said the company has been in close contact with the homeowners and are working to reimburse them.
鈥淥ver 35 million guests have stayed on Airbnb, and property damage is extremely rare,鈥� he wrote, explaining that the company is cooperating with Calgary police, who were called to the home three times during the guest鈥檚 three-day stay.
The homeowners had been told that four people would be staying at the home from Saturday to Monday, but neighbours reported seeing a party bus roll up on Saturday evening.
Police responded to three noise complaints, but the party wasn鈥檛 shut down until Monday morning, when a fight broke out in front of the house.
Police told CTV the significant damage to the house included broken furniture, condiments smeared on the walls, as well as shattered glass, cigarette butts and other garbage strewn on the floor.
One officer called the mess "disgusting" and said the couple was forced to hire professional cleaners to remove stains from bodily fluids including urine, semen and vomit.
鈥淭he drugs, the sex, everything imaginable that would violate a home, has happened here. We don鈥檛 want to touch anything. We can鈥檛 sleep in these beds again, we can鈥檛 walk on these carpets in bare feet, ever again,鈥� homeowner on Wednesday.
Police have reached out to the renter, though no charges have yet been laid.
