BEIJING - Canada's water polo team was hammered by Montenegro 12-0 in Olympic preliminaries Tuesday.

The loss was the second in a row for Canada, which fell 16-6 to Spain on Sunday.

"We've been humiliated two games in a row," said Nathaniel Miller of Pierrefonds, Que. "The intensity and the focus are just not there. Even our shots are not as strong. Mentally, we are not at a good level.

"I am not looking for excuses, but this is what explains our bad performance since the beginning of the tournament."

Canada and Montenegro are relatively new entries to the event.

The Canadians haven't participated in the Games since 1984, while Montenegro is making its Olympic debut.

Canada next plays Australia on Wednesday.

"Australia is a good team," Miller said. "We have to perform to our usual level for this game."

In other results, Spain beat Australia 9-8; the United States edged Italy 12-11; Hungary beat Greece 17-6; Croatia defeated Serbia 11-8; and Germany edged China 6-5.
