Loblaw Companies Ltd. stores are back up and running after a computer outage early Thursday caused cash registers to malfunction and forced the closure of several stores across the country.

Early Thursday, the company’s customer service department told Â鶹´«Ã½ that all Loblaws stores had been affected by the problem and had to close.

The problem affected other store brands under the Loblaw banner across the country, include No Frills and the Real Canadian Superstore. Most of the affected stores were in Atlantic Canada and Ontario.

It did not involve Shoppers Drug Mart stores or PC Financial banks, Company spokeswoman Catherine Thomas told The Canadian Press. She added there were no privacy concerns as the glitch impacted only cash register functions, she added.

By 10:30 a.m. ET, the company’s public relations department announced that the issue had been fixed, and that all stores were back up and running.

It added, though, that checkout times might be slower than normal and apologized to customers for any inconvenience.

It is not clear what caused the malfunction, but the company is investigating.
