Two brothers who both recently served in Afghanistan were killed Tuesday morning in a car accident near Quebec City.

Jonathan and Eric Leduc were driving on Highway 40 when their car lost a wheel and drove into a ditch, according to Quebec provincial police.

According to provincial police, the car careened off the road around 4 a.m. after its driver, Eric, lost control. Jonathan was ejected from the vehicle

Police believe speed was a cause. They have not determined whether alcohol was a factor.

Jonathan Leduc, 22, served in the infantry in Afghanistan in 2006 for nine months with the Royal 22nd Regiment, also knows as the Van Doos.

Eric Leduc, 25, was a member of the 12e Regiment blinde du Canada. He drove an armoured vehicle while serving in Afghanistan and had just returned in the spring.

The brothers leave behind their parents, Jeannot and Bertha, sister Melissa, 24, and their girlfriends in their hometown of Ste-Anne-de-la-Perade, Que.

"The family is deeply affected," their cousin, Sebastien Lepine, told The Canadian Press on Wednesday.

"It's very tough to lose two people. Jonathan and Eric were two members of the Leduc family who were very present, very important for us, and their deaths are very tough for everybody."
