KABUL, Afghanistan - A bomb killed a NATO service member Wednesday in southern Afghanistan, where the coalition has stepped up its campaign to capture insurgents.

The coalition did not disclose details of the service member's death. It brings to 46 the number who have died so far this month.

NATO also said three suspected insurgents had been captured Tuesday, including one who ran a bomb operation with materials imported from Pakistan. He was detained in Helmand province after attending the funeral of a militant leader in Garmsir district.

In the east, a leader of the al-Qaida-linked Haqqani network was captured in Khost province, and a Taliban who plotted assassinations against Afghan government officials was captured in Paktia province.

And in eastern Wardak province, a NATO helicopter made a hard landing because of an apparent mechanical malfunction, but no one aboard was injured, said Maj. Michael Johnson, a NATO spokesman in Kabul. No enemy activity was reported in the area, he said.
