SOURIS, Man. - The dikes are holding in the town of Souris, Man., where the swollen Souris River crested overnight at a lower level than anticipated.

Mayor Darryl Jackson says the community is feeling comfortable after months of building and maintaining dikes to first prevent flooding from the spring melt, then runoff from heavy rain.

The other good news came Tuesday when the Souris Health Centre returned to full operation, including its emergency room.

Downstream, officials in the village of Wawanesa say they're ready for the river's crest on Thursday and that their sewage treatment plant and area bridges are protected.

Once the Souris River crests, a sustained period of high water is expected for about a week before the river will start to drop.

Heavy rain in North Dakota is swelling the Red River, so Manitoba officials will activate the floodway around Winnipeg tomorrow to control river levels within the city.
