Hollywood is turning out in 50 shades of grey and red on the red carpet this year.

The dresses are grey, the suits are grey, the sky is grey and the rain is coming down, but that's not putting a damper on the evening.

Are we shocked by Lady Gaga wearing bright red rubber gloves with her high-shouldered white gown? It's not meat. No big deal.

Slit dresses are popular for the women, while tuxedos and bow ties are big for the guys.

Is that the real John Travolta? His face is caked in white makeup, and he's got a thick chain necklace tucked under his collar. And he's in black. All black. Kelly Preston looks all the more vibrant standing next to Travolta in her blue mermaid dress.

Gwyneth Paltrow did pink right this time with a slinky, form-hugging dress by Ralph and Russo. The only caveat? She has a giant flower on her left shoulder that looks like it was lifted off a wedding cake.

Jennifer Aniston's Versace dress has a metallic, chainmail-like look to it.

Zoe Saldana's Versace dress was more natural with a cream-coloured, wrapped look.

Emma Stone was more interested in Clint Eastwood's casual arrival than in talking about her green dress. The dress, for the record, didn't quite fit with Stone's striking red hair.

Scarlett Johansson looks stunning with her hair up and the sides of her head shaved. She's wearing a tight green dress with sharp lines along with a lacey green necklace.

Jennifer Lopez's flesh-toned sparkly gown was stunning and a little treacherous, judging from her comments. She told reporters it was a bit of challenge to get around in the dress. The plunging neckline also looks like it could create new challenges if she moves too much.

"It's a party dress," she said.

Reese Witherspoon kept it simple with a slender white dress banded at the waist and around the shoulders in black. But it's not all about the dress, folks. Witherspoon is backing the campaign to encourage reporters to ask about more than just clothes.

"We're more than just our dresses," she said on the red carpet. "We are so happy to be here and talk about the work that we've done. It's hard being a woman in Hollywood or any industry."

Rising star (lord) Chris Pratt and wife Anna Faris were one of the best-looking couples on the red carpet. Pratt was neatly shaven and Faris got in on the grey trend with her dress.

The two said they plan to party all week while their child is at home.

"He's two-and-a-half. He can look after himself for a few days," said Pratt.

No man wore white better than the dashing Benedict Cumberbatch, who hopes to take home Best Actor honours for 'The Imitation Game.' Cumberbatch paired his white jacket with black trousers.

There were some awkward moments on the red carpet, too. Dakota Johnson got a little sassy when asked about her mother, Melanie Griffith, who apparently has not seen 'Fifty Shades of Grey' yet.

Ethan Hawke had an odd moment with his wife, Ryan. The two were waving and gesturing at each other in the crowd.

"You see how beautiful my wife looks," Ethan Hawke said in an interview later. "He's an actor," Ryan Hawke added.

Julianne Moore's feathered white dress from Chanel is distracting with black flowers around the waist, ankle and bust lines.

"I think it's time to really make strides on Alzheimer's," said Moore, who plays a woman suffering from the disease in 'Still Alice.'

Lupita Nyong'o bucked the trend with her pearl dress by Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa. The dress was the talk of the pre-Oscars show.

'Birdman' star Michael Keaton was restrained on the red carpet. "I knew this was going to be a tricky movie to pull off," he said. He described the Oscars as the Hollywood version of the Super Bowl.

But black is also in (it always is), and blonde beauty Margot Robbie is the early standout. She showed up in a flowing black dress with a plunging neck and a peacock-coloured necklace.

'Fifty Shades of Grey' Dakota Johnson is rocking it it in a simple, straight-lined red dress from Saint Laurent with a slit down the left and a glittery silver strap over the left shoulder.

Felicity Jones from 'The Theory of Everything' is also going grey with her flowing light grey gown from Alexander McQueen.

Laura Dern's strapless dress looks like a shiny, studded, slate-coloured piece of armour.
