MONTREAL - An industry watcher says Apple has surpassed BlackBerry maker Research In Motion to become the world's fourth largest mobile phone vendor due to its popular lPhone 4.

Tech trends firm IDC says Apple (Nasdaq:AAPL) wasn't recently in the top five vendors and it knocked Research In Motion (TSX:RIM) down to fifth spot in the third quarter.

IDC says Apple's record shipment performance stems from the introduction of the iPhone 4 in 17 new countries last quarter.

IDC says Apple shipped 14.1 million units in the quarter versus RIM's 12.4 million.

The No. 1 mobile phone vendor was still Finland's Nokia, followed by Samsung and LG Electronics, both of South Korea.
