TORONTO - Alice Munro, who is widely lauded as one of Canada's finest authors, has revealed she's had a fight with cancer.

Munro, 78, was speaking Wednesday night at a sold-out event in Toronto, which kicked off the 10-day International Festival of Authors.

In an on-stage conversation with fellow author Diana Atkhill about age, Munro briefly alluded to having had heart bypass surgery and said she "just had cancer."

Still, Munro said she's "been lucky with her health," unlike her mother, who contracted Parkinson's disease at a relatively young age and died in her late 50s.

Earlier this year, Munro was named the third recipient of the Man Booker International Prize, honouring her life's work.

She has also won two Giller Prizes and three Governor General's Literary Awards.

Her most recent book is a short story collection entitled, "Too Much Happiness."
