TORONTO - Several women's health groups are urging voters to consider Stephen Harper's track record on abortion when they go to the polls on May 2.
Abortion rights advocates held a news conference today at the Morgentaler abortion clinic in Toronto.
They say that despite the prime minister's promise not to reopen the abortion debate, women's reproductive rights will be restricted if the Conservatives are re-elected.
New Brunswick Morgentaler representative Simone Leibovitch says Harper will be under tremendous pressure from his caucus, the majority of whom are opponents of abortion.
The women's groups say Harper has made the same promise in the past, only to cut funding from the International Planned Parenthood Association.
And during the G8 summit last summer, the government excluded abortion money for women in developing countries from its G8 maternal-health initiative.
